Don’t Use Your <head>

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Where did you place your Google Analytics script?

Hopefully not in the <head>...

Google's Analytic script is pretty intensive and if placed in the head then your pages could be taking longer to load than need be.

Your script, like the one below, should be placed directly before the close of the </body> tag!

CODE:
  1. <script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" type="text/javascript">
  2. </script>
  3. <script type="text/javascript">
  4.   _uacct = "UA-XXXXXXX-1";
  5.   urchinTracker();
  6.
  7. </script>

Judging by the fact that some big dogs like: Copyblogger, ShoeMoney and CSSBeauty all have it wrong, you might want to check yourself.

Just trying to give you a <head>s up :)

All Work and No Play…

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

You know what they say about all work and no play...

So let's hear it - what's your all time favorite vids to play?

Here's mine:

  1. Ultima IV - The quintessential RPG.
  2. Half Life 2 - Upped the ante on the excellent HL1.
  3. Unreal Tournament - The best multiplayer game ever.
  4. Monkey Island - So funny and so well written.
  5. Duke Nukem 3D - The first online FPS that started me down a long dark road.
  6. Mortal Combat II - On the Sega, in the dorms, FATALITY!
  7. Call of Duty - Totally absorbing.
  8. Lode Runner - A classic from 1983. Commodore 64’s best.
  9. Dragons Lair - 1983 was a good year. Laser disk first. Most my allowance ate by that machine at the Mall.
  10. Mario Kart (DS) - Great multiplayer fun.

The Positive Side of Negative Margins

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

I've been thinking negatively once again and instead of keeping my thoughts to myself I thought I'd share them with you. In this article we look at how negative margins work and how to apply them in everyday usage.

A number of people suffer under the misconception that negative margins are in some way a hack; they are not. In fact negative margins are valid CSS and extremely useful in certain situations. They only become a hack if you are using them to fix an error that you have made elsewhere. In normal usage negative margins work quite well and are supported across modern browsers. However, there are issues if you use negative margins on the opposite side of a float (e.g. floating left and then using a negative margin on the right) although most modern browsers now behave the same way when this happens. In some of the examples below you will see what I mean. Let's dive in!
