Nice post! These are all great points and I couldn’t agree more. It doesn’t matter how perfect your optimization is, if visitors aren’t impressed enough to return or recommend your website.

I couldn’t agree more. I believe in SEO only so far as making it as easy as possible for search engines to find my site (not using un-indexable content, and giving my pages meaningful names and titles) but other than that, I really don’t do much. I choose to focus on creating a great website with compelling services and content.

The key word is balance. While Guy is probably not the best example here, what Golgotha is trying to say is not to lose yourself in a sea of SEO while forgetting other aspects of running a good site.

@rick – I am an advocate of SEO. I hope the article did not make is sound otherwise? But, what’s more important than all the SEO skills in the world is having a quality product. Guy and Seth no doubt initially benefited from whatever fame they have. But, like I said, that only gets people to listen to you, after that you better have something to say. And these guys do.

I agree with your point but you, as so many others, cite people like Guy and Seth… who will get huge amounts of traffic because of the fame they had before they began blogging. Both Guy and Seth got a huge SEO benefit – inbound links – based on who they are, not just their content. They did NOT just build a good website – they brought huge benefits based on, basically, their personal brands. Did Guy get all of the mentions and inbound links for his first several articles based on the quality of those articles? Of course not.. .though they were good. He got them because he’s GUY KAWASAKI.

Yes, they need to write good content. But let’s face it… if *I* write that exact same content I’d not get the same traffic.

I guess what I’m saying is that simply building a good site with good content isn’t enough – you need to do a lot of other things, including offline activities and, yes SEO in the form of link building – in order to get that site exposure.
