Yep building your own rig is the way to go.

PC Gamer Magazine found the ATI Radeon HD 4870-X2 to be faster than the NVidia GTX 280.

Bzzt! Even at the time this article was written, the ATI card you mentioned was NOT the fastest card on the market. The NVidia GTX 280 is the fastest card. However! After suffering for years with the poorly written NVidia drivers and then finally trying ATI, I'd have to say the latest ATI card you mentioned is the best option (I own one and it is quite impressive). NVidia holds more market share but ATI is cheaper with better quality hardware and drivers.

Also, the Logitech G15 keyboard is nowhere near as good as the G11. Reviewers find the display near useless and the macro keys on the G11 to be superior.

I built a new gaming rig for $1500 about the time this article was written (using said ATI card even though there were two faster NVidia cards). Not the fastest thing out there, but not bad either. I have yet to find a game that I can't max. out the settings on. Building your own system is quite an adventure - worthwhile too - you get to learn how a computer is built and save money in the process (if you are willing to put a bit of research into it). I ended up with a quality product 200 times better than any computer manufacturer would have put together.

One of the dudes around my house is asking repeatedly for Call of Duty, we'll keep your comment in mind.

For those looking at blu-ray movies, you might consider my page which has the top ten, according to Sound and Vision Magazine. That means they are not necessarily the best movies ever but they have the best sound and visuals for your blu-ray player. You can find my page at http://www.squidoo.com/blu-raydiscs2. It includes some great films.
