SEO Defined

Search Engine Optimization is the process of designing, developing, promoting and an all around nurturing of a website or webpage in an effort to achieve top rankings in the search engines results page (SERP) for a given keyword.

Most of us would probably be somewhat accepting of the definition provided above and yet it still gets really cloudy on what exactly is an SEO.

That definition encompasses a lot, does it not? Does that mean that if you didn’t design the site or don’t redesign the site that you are not doing a thorough search engine optimization job? Does adding or modifying just the META tags of a page qualify you as an SEO? If I build the entire site but don’t promote it, what does that make me – a webmaster, but not an SEO? Now we’re starting to see why it’s so tricky to define SEO and why there is so much debate. Not only that but it also gives reason as to why there are such varied prices for search engine optimization.

The lesson learned here is that if you are a company seeking search engine optimization services you will want to know exactly what you are paying for. Make sure that you have a detailed plan of what the SEO intends to implement in an effort to have your website climb the search engine listing ladder.

So now that we have a ‘clear as mud’ definition of what search engine optimization is, this leaves us with the question of what makes one professional?

As already mentioned there is no credential, no certification, no diploma that one can tout as giving them professional status. Despite the lack of credential this doesn’t stop many from claiming the title and policing the SEO forums of the Internet. This leads us to the second reason I propose why SEOs have such a difficult time getting along.
